DIFFERENT COUNTRIES – SAME PROCEDURE LEARN ABOUT THE 5 PHASES OF CORONAVIRUS

Consum is changing, less demand for beauty and fashion, high sales on Netflix!

People feel much under pressure, feel threatened, feel in shock, do panic shopping – those are the psychological effects of the coronavirus outbreak in a country.

At today 20 March 2020 we see this:

China: going more back to normal life

Spain: quarantine all over the country

Germany: First signs of panic reactions such as panic shopping

what are the forms the coronavirus crisis is showing worldwide?

The institut Concept M has done psychological deep interviews in China, Italy Germany and US to evaluate the emotional impact of the corona crisis to citizens in those countries using interviews in cities Beijing, Rom, Berlin, Cologne, New York.

Worldwide there is a similar pattern that can be divided in 5 Phases:

  1. Incubation
  2. Panic
  3. Isolation
  4. Recovery and new orientation
  5. Back to normalisation

Different countries stand – due to the beginning of the crisis in their territorium – in different phases by today.

Governments and citizens: Get the wake up call!

This is the great chance for AFRICA TO LEARN FROM THESE EXPERIENCES! and avoid doing the same mistakes.

If society or the individual citizen, infection with coronavirus follows mostly theses 5 phases of disease and infection:

Phase 1: Incubation – a phase in between denying and fear

Phase 2: Panic and action – start of fight or flight reactions

Phase 3: Isolation and depression – keep distance and live in uncertainty

Phase 4: New start – new ways of life and new perspectives

Phase 5: Recovery and normalisation – a new more easy start back to normal life

Let’s take a look at some more details from the scientific findings

Phase 1: Incubation – a phase in between denying and fear

At first individuals hear about coronavirus in the media, epdidemia happening in OTHER countries. Social media and others communicate true facts and face news, the infection is taken very serious or even not serious enough. But in the end everyone hAS HEARD ABOUT IT AND HAS HIS OWN THOUGHTS; PEOPLE being torn apart between much fear and negotiation of the risk.

Phase 2: Panic and action – start of fight or flight reactions

The day when the first cases of corona infection are reported in your own country, than citizens react in the fight or flight pattern. People are torn apart between being in shock and unable to react or doing panic reactions such as panic shopping, are avoiding any contact, selling their stock, which leads to more crashes in society like shops with no food, stock exchange crashes etc. in the end people may start even fighting for food and things of daily life like toilet paper, sanitary tissues, fuel etc.

Phase 3: Isolation and depression – keep distance and live in uncertainty

The last stronghold against this very infectious coronavirus is social distance and avoiding any contact to outside people and structures.

If people follow these instructions – mostly enforced by the state government in a county or region – than the spreading of the virus is lamed, much less people become infectious. much less people show symptoms and much less severe cases show up, meaning in the end much less people will die on this disease.

Of course people mostly do not like the state government to put them in quarantine, lock them at their homes and restrict their free movement inside and outside the country, but this is by far the best method to stop the virus spreading in a region. regions that were forced or voluntarily follow this instructions has tremendous advantages and very low cases of infection, of severe sickness and of death tolls. This is comparable like a hurricane or war is running over your country: so you go to the bunker and wait till it’s over. Of course being alone in isolation people feel is a real challenge, but it’s just for a short time and it will save lives. so DO IT. It is the best and consequent measure you can do and it is totally in your own hands.

Phase 4: New start – new ways of life and new perspectives

The corona crisis has put people in most countries in a new and unexpected situation. People come closer together as husband and wife, as parents and children, as families, doing things like family games and family movies more together than ever. Even talking more and interacting more than ever. being in a quarantine for some weeks such can also have a good impact on the togetherness of families.

Businesswise the corona crisis in the countries that went through or are in has had an impact for change as well: people have to work online now, they have to work from home offices if possible. the online business is booming, while the normal businesses mostly must shut down – with the exception of food supply chains, pharmacies, doctors practise and hospitals. Online shopping is booming much in the countries that were examined.

People are forced to overthink their lives – privately and in business.

Phase 5: Recovery and normalisation – a new more easy start back to normal life

So far only China has reached this phase of recovery, While case numbers are decreasing now in China (status quo 20th March 2020) People come back to the street and towards a life as it has been lived before. But recovery also has its challenges, there is no easy way back to normality. Business connections and lines are broken, schools, universities and the whole education sector has large gaps. people that have passed on are missing in the structures.

Summary:

Learning from other countries will help Africa very much to best master the crisis.

5 Phases will most likely occur in all countries going through the corona infection challenge.

From negotiation to panic to recovery it may be a long way that can take several month.

Consequent crowd control measures enforced by the government of a country, such as shutting down flights, normal society and business life etc. has proven to be of highest value to stop the spread of infection with coronavirus, scientifically called COVID-19.

let’s learn from each other and support each other. We live in ONE WORLD and on ONE PLANET.

God bless AFRICA in these challenging days.
