Some nurse from UK writes this: “What I have seen a lot of are recommendations for how to try to avoid getting coronavirus I.e. good hand washing, personal hygiene and social distancing, but what I have NOT seen a lot of, is advice for what happens if you actually get coronavirus, which many of us will.
So as from our experiences we recommend this advice as best practise for you:
“You basically just want to prepare as though you know you’re going to get a nasty respiratory infection with a persistent pathogen (virus, bacteria, fungus) , like bronchitis or pneumonia. Just have the foresight to know it might come your way and you will get the infection !”
How you should prepare and what you should buy in preparation of getting the disease:
So what should you prepare? Things you should actually buy ahead of time of a possible infection are these:
Your personal preparation checklist:
-Paracetamol, (not Ibuprofen cause it acts suppressive to the immune response inflammatory system of the blood cells, which you DO want to function very fine during the crisis)
whatever your generic brand is,
-Mucus thinning cough medicine of choice (check the label and make sure you’re not doubling up on Paracetamol),
-Honey and lemon can work just as well!
-Vick vaporub for your chest is also a great suggestion
– lavendula droplets can help free your bronchi and lungs from mucus and give you free breathing again
– cinnamon to put in your tea is antidiabetic, antibacterial, anti-infectious and antifungal. Take small amounts only like half a teaspoon per cup.
A humidifier in the room of a sick person will help!
If you don’t have a humidifier, that would be a good thing to buy and use in your room when you go to bed overnight. You can also just turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom breathing in the steam.
If you have asthma – what to do best!
If you have a history of asthma and you have a prescription inhaler, make sure the one you have isn’t expired and refill it/get a new one if necessary.
Prepare for meals to have at hand when you are sick!
This is also a good time to meal prep: make a big batch of your favorite soup to freeze and have on hand.
Fever? – to manage any fever take Paracetamol only!
For symptom management and a fever over 38°c, take Paracetamol rather than Ibuprofen(see explanation above please)
There is danger of hydration especially in aged people
So don’t hydrate – drink a lot! It will also thin the mucus produced by the virus and help get it out for better breathing.
Stock up on whatever your favorite clear fluids are to drink. Though tap water is fine, you may appreciate some variety!
Take this time and some time after you overcame the infection and its clinical symptoms to REST at least 2 weeks IN the house!
Rest a`lot. You should NOT be leaving your house! Even if you are feeling better you may will still be infectious for fourteen days and therefore avoid older people and those with existing health conditions! Ask friends and family to leave any supplies they bring, outside, to avoid contact.
When should you go to hospital and must see a doctor?
Hospitals in your area will be overcrowded soon, once the pandemia has reached thousands of people, also panic makes people unnecessarily see hospitals.
You should check twice before you go to hospital!
You DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL unless you are having trouble breathing or your fever is very high (over 39°C) and unmanaged with meds. Studies on the ground show, that 90% of healthy adult cases thus far have been managed at home with basic rest/hydration/over-the-counter meds (OTC meds).
Get advice from MD´s online or on the phone
If you are worried or in distress or feel your symptoms are getting worse, call a hospital or a doctors practise and they will advise if you need to go to hospital. The hospital beds will be used for people who actively need oxygen/breathing treatments/IV fluids.
Special patients with lung deficiencies – what they need!
If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants, now is a great time to talk to your Doctor or specialist about what they would like you to do if you get sick.
Good news and advice for children and pregnant women!
One major relief to you parents is that kids do VERY well with coronavirus— they usually bounce back in a few days (but they will still be infectious), Just use pediatric dosing to calm fever and pain.
NOTE: Pregnant women – even if you get the disease COVID-19 it doesn’t mean your baby unborn or born will get it. There are no cases known so far where the baby was hurt or infected. If you as an expecting mother get the disease, take care of any medication you take against fever and pain, especially in the first 3 month of pregnancy, ask your gynecologist or treating doctor what to take and what to do in your special case please.
Be calm and prepare rationally and everything will be fine!
